Hands On Classes on The Farm
|
|
Next to the
produce stand we farm a variety of crops to demonstrate farming
and gardening methods, as well as to supply the stand.
 Crops
include various lettuces, cauliflower, broccoli, celery, artichokes,
strawberries, squash, tomatoes, sweet corn, peas, carrots,
green beans, cabbage, cucumbers, peppers, potatoes, onions,
asparagus, beets and herbs. We also grow pumpkins and winter
squash during the late summer to fall. Flowers provide beauty,
beneficial insect habitat, and the basis for bouquets. The
produce is harvested daily to sell at the stand.
 Everything
on The Farm's demonstration farm is grown organically, that
is, without any synthetically derived chemicals and pesticides.
Four out of our five acres are certified organic by California
Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF). The fifth acre will be certified
organic in the near future.
 As
part of our farm tours, we use our demonstration farm to explain
both the established methods of conventional farming in the
Salinas Valley, as well as the more specialized and unique approach
of organic farming. Visitors are taken out into the fields to
see how the various crops are grown and harvested. Tour participants
have the opportunity to do a little farm work themselves and
can also learn about tractors, implements and irrigation. Gardeners
and fellow farmers may pick up a tip or idea to use at home.
All visitors will develop a greater appreciation of the work
and skill necessary to produce healthy food. On occasion we
present lectures on specific topics related to agriculture.
